Basilica de Santa Maria
In the period when the Muslims still ruled over Elche, the most important mosque stood where the Basilica of Santa Maria stands today. After the reconquest, this mosque remained until 1334. Then came the first Catholic church that stood there until the end of the 15th century.
A second larger church was built in 1556. After very heavy rainfall, it collapsed in 1672. Construction of the current church began in the same year. These works lasted until 1784.
