Ciudad descubierta

Just next to the Alicante town hall (ayuntamiento) there is the new part where nowadays the offices are located. We do not come for the offices but for a visit to the archaeological site "la Ciudad Descubierta" which is located at the bottom of this building. Before we can discover the lost city, we are kindly requested to go through a detection gate.
Alicante has played an important role in history for many centuries. The oldest information about these excavations goes back to the 12th century, the Islamic period. Possibly the spaces were then used by fishermen or workers. This could be because it is so close to the coastline. Traces of habitation in the 15th-16th century have also been found.
La Ciudad Descubierta can be visited (free of charge) from Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
