Museo arqueologico de Orihuela

At several places on this website you can read that just about every Spanish city or municipality has its own archaeological museum. Of course a city like Orihuela cannot be missing from that list.

Is this the umpteenth copy of the same archaeological museum? No, it isn't. And why this is not the case mainly has to do with the location. This museum is in fact located in a former church, and that gives it a special appearance.

The museum was founded in 1902 by Father Julio Furgus as the Museo del Antiguedades del Colegio Diocesano Santo Domingo and did not arrive in the current building until 1997. The collection consists of objects that date back to the Paleolithic.

Temporary exhibitions and other activities are regularly organized in the second room, the "Sala de Hombres".
