Bateria de las cenizas

When we talk about cannons, we often think of the medieval cannons that we find at the many castles and fortresses. Nice! But if you really want to be overwhelmed by monsters of cannons, then you should definitely visit La Batería de las Cenizas.

The town of Los Belones is located at the end of the Mar Menor. From there it is another 10 minutes further on the RM-314 towards Portman. We leave the golf of the La Manga Club Resort behind us and a little further we come across the RM-F42 on the right. Normally there is a white sign to "el Llano del Beal". Take this road. We park our car on the left side of the Monte de las Cenizas aparcamiento. You walk a little back to the RM-314 and you continue on this road (about 200 m) on foot until the first turn to the left. We now come to a gravel road that is closed by a fence and where there is an information sign. It is this road that will lead us to la Batería de las Cenizas de Portman.

The Batería de las Cenizas de Portman is, as the name suggests, on the Monte de Las Cenizas de Portman, at an altitude of 305 meters above sea level. Calculated from the parking lot to the Batería we walk about a distance of 3 kilometers through a pine forest on a wide, winding gravel road with a gentle slope. It is an easy walking route suitable for large and small. Once we reach the top, we are standing in front of a monumental concrete gate that gives us access to la Batería de las Cenizas de Portman. The inspiration for this gate came from Mexico, in particular from the Temple of the White Warriors of Chichen Itzá and corresponds to the Maya-Toltec style. The gate symbolizes giant feathered snakes (Kulkulcán) that represent the God of the Mayans.

La Batería de las Cenizas de Portman was built in 1931 on top of another building dating from before the eighteenth century and was in use until 1994. Both La Batería de las Cenizas de Portman and the other military baterías strategically located from Cabo Tiñoso and Cabo Negreta had the purpose of defending the naval base of Cartagena. Thanks to the cooperation of the eight most important baterías and their anti-aircraft guns, they were able to prevent the enemy from getting closer. And then you are standing in front of such a cannon, a Viker model 1923. It is an impressive steel monster with a 381 mm caliber, a tube length of no less than 18 meters, a weight of 88.000 kilos and a maximum range of 35 kilometers. Wow! It is said that when these cannons fired shots to warn the residents of Cartagena of imminent danger, they made so much noise that windows even broke in the buildings of the city. When viewing these mastodons, this may well be true.

In addition to the imposing cannons, there are other constructions and buildings. There are different tunnels (which you cannot enter) that lead to underground rooms that contain different spaces such as the engine room, the gunpowder room, the loading room and a room with spare parts. In addition, there is a "central station" in which a generator was stored. In addition to the existing entrances and tunnels, there is also an underground exit that was used in an emergency and that could safely lead everyone outside through the mountain. You can also visit the general workshops, the telemetric and observation checkpoints of la Batería de las Cenizas de Portman. Finally, we have the separate buildings that served as a place to stay and where the staff were also housed.

When seeing all this impressive do not forget to enjoy the beautiful panorama of the bay of Portman, the Mar Menor, Calblanque, the lighthouse of Cabo de Palos and the impressive cliffs of the Serra de la Fausilla.
