Six kilometers north of Bullas in the middle of the agricultural areas between Bullas and La Copa lies el Palacete de Fuente de la Higuera, also known in the region as Castillo de Don Fabio. Although the building is not open to the public, it is still worth stopping here for a glimpse of what was once a colossal and stately palace. The original manor house that stood here belonged to Joaquín María Fernández de Córdoba, Count of Sastago. In 1614, ownership was transferred to Francisco Melgares de Aguilar. When Francisco died in 1920, the estate passed into the hands of his heir Fabio Carreño Marsilla. He decided to build a stately mansion on the same place as the original mansion on top of the natural water source La Rana. Construction began sometime between 1922 and 1924 and ended in the 1930s. The two-storey main building was built in an eclectic style. The central staircase consisted of gilded iron. The family arms were incorporated into the railing. The body of the staircase was decorated with tiles in Nasrid style, a style that can still be found today in the Casino of Murcia. Together with the Bohemian crystals, the Saxon porcelain and Carrara marble, this mansion quickly became a real palace. The bathrooms on the ground floor, the various toilets, central heating, thermal insulation in the walls and glazed tiles of Sevillian origin made this house a very comfortable and luxurious palace, especially for that time. In addition to the main building, there were a few garages and the house of the guards on the domain. The garden was landscaped with artificial lakes and fountains. The entire domain was surrounded by a high hard stone wall with defensive points at the various corners. For security reasons, Fabio Carreño Marsilla decided to leave the area with his wife and seven children during the civil war. The palace was left lonely and deserted. At first it was occupied by various political groups. Then it fell into the hands of looters. Little remains of what was once a stately palace. After Fabio's divorce, the palace was never inhabited again. After Fabio's death, his daughter, Rosario Carreño, inherited the palace and associated buildings. She sold the properties to an investment group. The palace remains dilapidated.
