Cuevas del Rodeo
(the cave houses of Rojales)

In the 18th century a group of miners from Murcia came to Rojales to work in agriculture. They didn't have much money but they did have experience with carving stones. That is why they decided to carve out a number of houses in the hill above the center of Rojales in which it was pleasant to live every season. The thick stone walls, usually one meter thick, act as isolation and keep the warm sun rays out so that it is nice and cool inside in the summer and a heater is not needed in the winter. For generations the cave dwellings remained popular because they were more robust and comfortable than the mud huts in which the farm workers usually lived. The cave dwellings were gradually abandoned in the first half of the 20th century. Until the municipality started its art project in the 1990s, the caves were empty. The project means that any interested artist or craftsman can rent a cave if it is empty. The artist or craftsman must clean the cave himself, renovate it and can furnish it to his own taste. A large number of artists have established their studio in the cave dwellings. This special neighborhood is now a tourist attraction. The houses are open every first Sunday of the month and the works of the artists are exhibited. Tourists can view and buy the works. About 17 cave houses, painted white with blue doors, invite you to visit.

In the western part of Cuevas del Rodeo there are a number of rusted metal sculptures such as a bicycle, a parasol and a piano. From here you have a beautiful view of Rojales and the surrounding area. If you look closely, you will see other cave houses that are still inhabited. Sports enthusiasts can take on the challenge and visit the Cuevas del Rodeo via the hills of Rojales. If you are less sporty and don't want to miss the Cuevas, don't worry ... You can drive there by car via Calle Opalo.
