Novelda - Castell de la mola

Castell de la mola

El Castillo de la Mola was built in the 12th century on top of an old Roman fortress. The original floor plan was polygonal with eight square turrets on the outside irregularly distributed along the 4 meter high and 2 meter thick wall. Little has been preserved of what the castle once was. A few towers have disappeared over the years and with the evolution of the castle. The ruins of the wall have been preserved.

Via the main entrance gate with a semicircular arch surrounded by square blocks of freestone we enter el Castillo de la Mola. In the courtyard we see two towers and a number of residences that have been excavated including the kitchen, the mill and the oven. To the left of the entrance gate we have a square tower. Once this tower was 20 meters high, now about 11 meters remains. That is why this tower is also called "la torre desmochada" or "truncated tower".

During the excavations, a rain storage place in the tower was encountered. That may explain why the entrance gate to the tower is at a certain height. The most striking tower is at the rear of the courtyard. This 15 meter wide and 17 meter high tower was only added to the castle in the 14th century. What makes this tower so special is its shape. The castle towers are usually quadrangular but this tower, also known as "Torre de los Tres Picos" is triangular. This makes it unique throughout Europe. You can climb the two floors through the access door with a semicircular arch. A staircase along the inner wall goes even further to the terrace where you have a beautiful view.

We recently checked the website of the municipality of Novelda. This works but access is often very difficult.
