El Torre del Tamarit

The watchtowers were built during the reign of Felipe II in 1552. They were strategically placed to spot the enemy at sea in time. The mutual communication took place at night by means of fire and with smoke signals during the day.

This square tower, the Torre del Tamarit, is located between the salt lakes of Santa Pola. His goal was to maintain communication with the countryside of Elche. The groups of flamingos that arrive here with hundreds form a beautiful view. It is also possible to spot kluten, storks and many other species of birds.

Unfortunately, the tower itself cannot be visited.
