Bullas has two impressive towers that can be seen from far. At first glance they seem to be two churches, but not all is as it seems. One tower is actually a church, the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora. The other tower at the intersection of Calle Santiago with Calle del Aguila is the Bell Tower of Bullas, el Torre del Reloj. The bell tower was of great importance to the farmers of Bullas. With its loud tones, the clock signaled when farmers could water their farmland in the countryside around Bullas. Initially, this role was fulfilled by the clock in the tower of the Iglesia de Nuestra señora. When it was determined that this clock no longer indicated the correct time, Mayor Joaquín Carreño Góngora decided not to restore it. Instead, in 1900, on the most visible place and also the highest point of Bullas, a new construction, the current Torre del Reloj, was built with a height of 16 meters. The clock comes from Switzerland. On July 25, 1900, the feast day of the Apostle Santiago, patron saint of Spain, the new bell tower was solemnly inaugurated. Officially, the tower was given the name of “el Torre de Santiago”, named after the patron saint, but popularly this quickly became “el Torre del Reloj”. Every year in the month of July, the inhabitants of Bullas gather around the tower to celebrate their patron saint, Santiago. During this celebration, dolls, the so-called “tarascas”, are set on fire in the Plaza del Reloj. Remarkable about el Torre del Reloj is that the dial is not facing the center of Bullas but towards the countryside. Not surprising if we look back at the purpose of the tower. In 1990 the Plaza del Reloj was renovated and at the same time the restoration of the Torre del Reloj also took place.
