The Concatedral de San Nicolás de Bari can be found in the ever-lively Santa Cruz neighborhood. Via the Calle Labradores at the Plaza del Abad Penalva you get access to this Co-Cathedral. The church was built between 1613 and 1663 on a monastery, which in turn was built on an old mosque. The monastery is known to date from the 15th century. Traces of this can still be found. The plans for the Concatedral de San Nicolás de Bari were made by Agustín Bernardino. He could proudly call himself a student of Juan de Herrera, a very renowned Spanish architect. But what about the Concatedral because it turns out to be something different from an ordinary Catedral. The Collegiate Church of San Nicolás was promoted to the rank of concatedral in 1959. That means that she has since shared the cathedral seat with the Catedral El Salvador in Orihuela. The name San Nicolás refers, yes, to the holy man on his white horse who mysteriously walks over the roofs on December 6 and brings presents to all good children. San Nicolás or also known as Nikolaos of Myra is also the patron saint of the city of Alicante. Every year on December 6 there is a mass in his honor in this Concatedral. Afterwards, a procession with the main figure of Saint Nicholas on his horse will travel the streets of Alicante and along the Christmas market. The appearance of this Concatedral with six interconnected side chapels is quite sober. What is striking anyway is the 45-meter-high blue dome designed by architect Michel de Real. The organ dates from the 16th century and can be called the oldest and largest organ in the Valencian Community.
